Life After Surgery

Remember that weight loss surgery is only a tool. It is important for you to take responsibility for your own actions by making healthy food choices after your surgery. The changes in your diet and lifestyle after surgery will last a lifetime. You will have a greater chance of long-term success if you surround yourself with people who understand and support your goals. Some of your family or friends may have difficulty supporting you. They may be unaware that certain comments they make or things they do are not supportive. Talk to your friends and family in an honest, calm manner. Explain to them your goals as well as what you need from them in the way of support. Also, explain to them specific behaviors that are not helpful to you.

Support groups are an excellent resource. You’ll find people who have similar wellness goals, who want to celebrate your successes, and who support you in challenging times. Support groups are devoted to common experiences, allowing you to share your feelings and ask questions in a safe, supportive environment. Form a network to share recipes and exercise tips. Remember, these meetings are meant for support, not medical advice.

The bariatric program at St Elizabeth Hospital wants to assure the long-term success of all patients. In that spirit, we attempt to give access to ongoing support to the patients by providing support group meetings. Our meetings are held quarterly:
