Ascension Parish is located in the heart of plantation country, and offers access to resplendent wildlife and scenery in the surrounding cypress swamplands. Home to a number of festivals including the Jambalaya Festival, the Boucherie Festival and the Louisiana Balloon Festival Ascension and surrounding areas are home to six major antebellum homes, three museums, Historic Site of Fort Butler as well as Tanger Outlet Center, Cabela's Outfitters, Houmas House Plantation, and Lamar-Dixon Expo Center.

In addition to Louisiana State and Southern Universities in Baton Rouge, and the University of New Orleans, Southern University at New Orleans, Loyola, Tulane, and Xavier Universities in New Orleans, Ascension is home to the River Parishes Community College & Ascension Technical College, both in Sorrento.
